The toughest part of getting through MEPS right now is the wait time. It can be a long day for applicants, and it can take more than one visit to complete all the required tests and paperwork. However, improvements are in the works, and by 2014 most entrance processing will happen virtually, without the applicant visiting a station. This is referred to as the Virtual Interactive Processing System or VIPS.
Elements of VIPS are already in place, including biometric scanning to enhance applicant security and speed the check-in process. Other changes planned for the future include:
- A certified physician near the applicant’s hometown will perform the MEPS physical
- Medical and personnel records will be digitized and automated
- ASVAB testing may take place in schools or testing centers, or potentially on a secure website
