ANNOTATION: “Transgender and gender non-conforming youth often face serious physical, emotional, and sexual abuse in group homes, detention centers, and correctional institutions. Because staff members are often unsure of how to provide respectful and supportive services to these youth, they may unwittingly subject them to situations that are discriminatory and harmful. This guide offers group care facilities information and tools to provide transgender and gender non-conforming young people with appropriate and informed care” (p. 2). Five chapters are contained in this publication: understanding transgender and gender non-conforming youth; the challenges of living with a stigmatized identity; group care facilities’ legal responsibility to treat transgender and gender non-conforming youth fairly and keep them safe; best practices for working with transgender and gender non-conforming youth; and best practices for administrators for changing culture, adopting practice guidelines and policies, and training and evaluating staff. An appendix provides the “Model Policy & Practice Guidelines for Providing Non-Discriminatory Services to LGBT [Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender] and Gender Non-Conforming Youth in Group Care Facilities”.
