ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — December 4, 2009 — The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is taking applications to select three students to attend the 2010 Research Science Institute (RSI) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The RSI is a six-week residential summer program sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) in collaboration with MIT, where participants work under the mentorship of eminent scientists and researchers. One student will be chosen from each of DoDEA's areas: Europe, Pacific, and the Americas. Expenses for lodging and meals are included as part of the RSI Program. DoDEA will pay for travel. Travel arrangements are made through the District Superintendent's Office.

Students selected to participate in RSI will experience college-level classes taught by distinguished professors from leading universities. Classes are designed to sharpen students' research skills as they complete hands-on research guided by mentors from corporations, universities and research organizations.

"The Center for Excellence in Education is committed to nurturing future leaders in science and technology for academically talented high school and college students," said Kim Day, Chief of Science for DoDEA.

"The RSI program is designed to develop student experience and proficiency in laboratory-based research, experimentation, design, testing, and evaluation related to engineering, science and other technical areas," Day added. "With the world becoming more and more driven by science and technology, this program is an incredible learning opportunity for our DoDEA students."

According to Day, each Area will recommend one applicant who has demonstrated superior achievement in mathematics, the sciences, and writing/presentation skills. RSI is open to students who have completed the third year of high school by the summer of 2010. Students need to provide evidence of their leadership potential in science and mathematics and an ability to lead in community and school activities.

DoDEA consists of the Department of Defense Dependents Schools located overseas, and the Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools located in the U.S. and its territories and possessions. DoDEA provides education to eligible DoD military and civilian dependents from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Education Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
