ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — January 25, 2007 — The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) selected four of its teachers as finalists to compete in the 2006 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program.

Bernard Rose, a fourth-grade science teacher from Diamond Elementary School at Fort Stewart, Ga., Robert Skully, a fourth grade science teacher from Hainerberg Elementary School, Wiesbaden, Germany, Kina Stallings, a sixth grade mathematics teacher from Heidelberg Middle School, Heidelberg, Germany, and Merita Stewart, an elementary mathematics teacher also from Diamond Elementary School, were selected by a panel that recently met at DoDEA headquarters located here.

The PAEMST program was established by Congress in 1983. The DoDEA finalists will have their application packets judged and reviewed at the national level, where one science and one math teacher from DoDEA will be selected for the 2006 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the nation's highest honor for kindergarten -12th grade teachers in these fields.

Presidential Awardees receive a citation signed by the President, a trip to Washington D.C. to attend a week-long series of recognition events and professional development seminars, and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.

DoDEA consists of the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) located overseas, and the Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) located in the United States and its territories and possessions.
