ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — May 19, 2006 — The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is pleased to announce that three of our students have been selected to participate in the Research Science Institute (RSI) sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education. The RSI will take place from June 26 to August 5, 2006, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Since DoDEA began participating in the RSI during the summer of 2002, 15 students, including those selected for this summer, have attended.

The selected DoDEA students for this summer are: Leif L. Bogen from E.J. King High School in Sasebo, Japan; Jeffrey A. Enderton from Heidelberg High School in Germany; and Frances Y. Kim from Seoul American High School in Seoul South Korea.

Located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Research Science Institute was established in 1984 and is the first summer science program to combine on-campus course work in scientific theory with off-campus work in scientific research. Students work under mentors who are scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.

Each summer approximately 75 high school students gather for six of the most stimulating weeks of their young lives. Selected from the United States and other nations, these students participate in a rigorous academic program which emphasizes advanced theory and research in mathematics, the sciences, and engineering. Students attend college-level classes taught by distinguished professors. Nationally recognized teachers conduct classes designed to sharpen research skills. In addition, students complete hands-on research with top mentors at corporations, universities, and research organizations.

RSI is open to students who have completed the third year of high school, or the equivalent, by the summer of 2005. The twenty-third annual summer session of RSI will be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from June to August, 2006.

Students selected for RSI will have demonstrated superior achievement in math, the sciences and verbal arts. They will have shown potential to become leaders in science. It is suggested that math PSAT scores be at least 75 and combined math and verbal PSAT scores be at least 140.
