ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — April 24, 2006 — Each year, Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools proudly join the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in recognizing the nation's teachers during National Teacher Appreciation Week. This year's commemorative week is scheduled for May 7–13, 2006.

Teacher Appreciation Week was established around 1944, and in 1953, Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day. America has been thanking its teachers every year since then. Since 1984, National PTA has designated the first week in May as a time for communities nationwide to honor teachers for being a guiding force in helping children develop into healthy, happy, and successful adults.

This celebration provides a wonderful opportunity for schools to work closely with PTAs and other community organizations to celebrate the contributions of teachers.

Interested media should contact local school principals and PTA leaders for details on local celebrations.

Background information on the National PTA follows.

National PTA is the largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the United States. A not-for-profit association of parents, educators, students, and other citizens active in their schools and communities, PTA is a leader in reminding our nation of its obligations to children.
