ARLINGTON, VA — November 29, 2010 — The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) recently announced Ms. Lois J. Rapp, Ed. S. as the superintendent of the Georgia/Alabama District for DoDEA’s stateside schools.

DoDEA operates 190 schools overseas and on military bases throughout the United States, its territories and Cuba; and serves more than 84,000 children of military families. Sixty-three of those schools operate stateside under DoDEA’s Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary schools (DDESS).

“Mrs. Rapp has extensive experience in collaborating with schools and making a difference in student achievement,” said Dr. Curtis. “Her leadership skills will provide the Georgia/Alabama District with the necessary focus on continuous school improvement.”

Rapp was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, but has lived in Ohio since 1970.

She is currently the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for the South-Western City School District in Columbus, Ohio. The school district is the 6th largest school district in the state, with approximately 20,000 students and the only member of the “Urban 21,” 21 urban school districts in the state of Ohio, to receive the designation of “Excellent” by the state of Ohio.

Previously, Rapp was the Assistant Superintendent for Greenon Local Schools as well as a curriculum coordinator for the Clark County Educational Service Center in Springfield, Ohio. Rapp has also been an adjunct professor for Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Her career as an educator began in the Springfield City School District as a middle school classroom teacher.

Rapp received her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from The Ohio State University and both her master’s and Educational Specialist degrees from Wright State University.

She was selected by the Ohio Department of Education to serve as an assessor for Praxis III, the new teacher licensure performance – based assessment. Rapp received commendations for her contributions to education by the Ohio House of Representatives and the Clark County Commissioners Board. She has served on the executive board for the Ohio Association of Supervisors of Curriculum and Development (OASCD) and is a past president of the Ohio School Supervisors’ Association (OSSA).

As a certified trainer, Rapp is recognized for her work with the Pathwise model of mentoring new teachers. She also serves on the state of Ohio Teacher Evaluation Committee.

Rapp is looking forward to working with DoDEA staff to provide students with a high quality education.

“I am truly excited about the opportunity to serve the students and families of our military personnel,” said Rapp. “I believe that my experiences in public education will complement the work of DoDEA as we work collaboratively with staff to provide the best education possible for our students.”

Rapp will begin her duties as superintendent on 2 January 2011.

DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education programs for Department of Defense (DoD) dependents who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality, public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, the United States, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Education Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
