ARLINGTON, VA — August 9, 2010 — The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) announced the selection of four Assistant Superintendents for its Guam, Heidelberg (Germany), Mediterranean, and Fort Stewart/South Carolina Districts.

The four new Assistant Superintendents are:

• Jeff Arrington – Guam District;
• Steven Sanchez – Heidelberg District;
• Kent Worford – Mediterranean District; and
• Gael Coyle – Fort Stewart/South Carolina District.

The new assistant superintendents are currently serving as principals in DoDEA schools in Japan and England.

“All four of our new Assistant Superintendents bring great experience and enthusiasm to these positions,” said Charlie Toth, Deputy Director of DoDEA. “I’m confident that each one will continue to apply their energy and dedication to our goal of highest student achievement.”

Arrington, currently the Principal at Edgren High School in Misawa, Japan will be the new Assistant Superintendent for the Guam District. Originally from Gilmer, Texas, he began his career with DoDEA in 1998 and has served as an educator and an administrator in Okinawa, Misawa (Japan), and in Guam. Prior to his assignments in DoDEA schools, Arrington served as the Assistant Principal/Acting Principal in the Winslow Public School District, Winslow, Arkansas. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Sanchez is currently the Principal at Kubasaki High School in Okinawa, Japan, and will move to be the Assistant Superintendent of the Heidelberg District. Sanchez has 26 years of experience as an educator and 20 years with DODEA. A native of Loomis, California, Sanchez graduated with honors from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1984 with a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Spanish. As an undergraduate he studied during the 1982-1983 school year at the University of Madrid.

Worford, currently the Principal at Lakenheath High School, in England, will be the new Assistant Superintendent for the Mediterranean District. He has served as an educator in DoDEA for the past 18 years. During his tenure with DoDEA, he has been a teacher and an administrator at Croughton High School, SHAPE Elementary and High School, and Lakenheath High School. Worford earned his Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in education from the University of Kansas and his Master of Arts Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Coyle is the current Principal at Alconbury High School, in England. She becomes the new Assistant Superintendent of the Fort Stewart/South Carolina District. Coyle has worked for DoDEA for 24 years. She first worked in Edzell, Scotland at Halsey Elementary School as a mild to moderate learning impaired teacher and later worked in England and Iceland as an educator and an administrator. Prior to working for DoDEA, Dr. Coyle was a junior high and middle school classroom teacher in Eugene, Oregon. She received her Master’s Degree from the University of Oregon in special education and completed her Doctorate in Administration and Supervision of Education in Oklahoma.

All of the Superintendents will be in place for the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year.

DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education programs for Department of Defense (DoD) dependents who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality, public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, the United States, Cuba, Guam and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Education Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
