ARLINGTON, VA — June 1, 2010 — Students at the Center, the new educational resource from the Department of Defense Education Activity’s (DoDEA) Educational Partnership, is available now in print and on a CD through Military OneSource at www.militaryonesource.com. The guide, which provides information on important policies, procedures and best practices that are critical to supporting the needs of military families’ education, is also available online at www.militaryk12partners.dodea.edu.
“Supporting military children takes a school-wide effort,” said Kathy Facon, Chief of the Educational Partnership. “We hope this resource will prove to be invaluable to military families, military leaders and school leaders who care about education for children of our service members.”
For educators serving children from military families in a public school system, the guide offers information on the different military service branches, ranks, and protocols. It outlines current DOD Initiatives to support schools and the U.S. Department of Education’s Impact Aid program. It also offers insights regarding the issues military families face including frequent transitions and parents deploying.
For families, the guide offers information on navigating the U.S. Education System, choosing a school and being an effective advocate for a child.
For military leaders, Students at the Center provides suggestions on supporting military families, forming and strengthening Installation-School Partnerships and ways to enhance communication between Local Education Activities, the military service and families.
“We are providing Students at the Center in multiple formats to ensure everyone who wants this resource can access it,” said Facon. “When families, commands and schools work together to meet the needs of the children in military families, everyone benefits.”
DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education programs for Department of Defense (DoD) dependents who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality, public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, the United States, Cuba, Guam and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Education Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
