ARLINGTON, VA — April 29, 2010 — Four DoDEA students are participating in the 48th National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) being held April 28-May 2, 2010, in Bethesda, Maryland.
Erin Schwartz from Bitburg High School in Bitburg, Germany, Alexander Gary from Aviano High School, in Aviano, Italy, Nicole Perry, from M.C. Perry High School in Iwakuni, Japan, and Alexis Mills from Guam High School, in Guam are representing DoDEA at the symposium.
The National JSHS brings together 240 high school students who qualify for attendance by submitting and presenting original scientific research papers in forty-eight regional symposia held at universities nationwide. Approximately 100 adult leaders, high school teachers, university faculty, ranking military guests, and others attend and join in encouraging the future generation of scientists and engineers and celebrating student achievement in the sciences.
Sponsored by the research offices of the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force and the Academy of Applied Science, JSHS promotes original research and experimentation in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics at the high school level and publicly recognizes students for outstanding achievement. By connecting talented students, their teachers, and research professionals at affiliated symposia and by rewarding research excellence, JSHS aims to widen the pool of trained talent prepared to conduct research and development vital to our nation.
JSHS allows high school students the support and resources to design and conduct original research in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) areas.

DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education programs for Department of Defense (DoD) dependents who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality, public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, the United States, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Education Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
