ARLINGTON, VA — April 7, 2010 — Four Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) students were selected as scholarship winners in the 46th Annual National Achievement Scholarship Program (NASP).
The NASP began in 1964 to recognize and honor scholastically talented African-American youth for their achievements. The NASP is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) and is privately funded by grants from 35 corporate organizations and professional associations, and the NMSC. The combined total of these scholarship awards is nearly $2 million dollars.
Six of the seven DoDEA students that were selected as semifinalists competed as finalists. Four of the finalists were among the 800 African-American students that received scholarships.
The scholarship winners are:
Sophia Seawell – Ramstein High School
Vanessa B. Whatley – Wiesbaden High School
Kaylie D. McGregor – Naples High School
Christopher P. Campbell – Seoul American High School
The finalists were:
Christian D. Randolph – Kaiserslautern High School
Derrick B. Lewis – Ramstein High School
More than 160,000 students participated in the National Achievement Scholarship Program when they took the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as high school juniors. Sixteen hundred of the highest scoring students went on to become semifinalists in the fall of 2009. Of those 1,600 students, 1,300 went on to compete for the Achievement Scholarship Awards as finalists. Finalists were selected based on high academic performance, a recommendation by a high school teacher or administrator, having SAT scores that coincide with their PSAT/NMSQT performance, and by submitting a written essay
Finalists were also required to provide information about their participation both in school and in their community, their leadership abilities and their educational goals.
Students that receive the Achievement Scholar Award have a strong record of accomplishments and the greatest potential for academic success in college.

DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education programs for Department of Defense (DoD) dependents who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality, public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, the United States, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Education Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
