PEACHTREE CITY, GA — June 16, 2009 — Dr. Elaine Beraza, Director, Department of Defense (DoD) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Cuba, (DoDDS-Cuba) announced today that Mr. Glenn Hughes has been named principal of E.A.White Elementary School, at Fort Benning, in the Georgia/Alabama District. He replaces Dr. Tommy Lee who spent nine years as principal of White Elementary School.

Hughes has worked for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) for more than 15 years in a variety of administrative positions around the world. He returns to Fort Benning where he was Principal at Stowers Elementary School from 1994-2001 and was named DDESS Principal of the Year. He left Stowers to become the Instructional Systems Specialist (ISS) for Instructional Technology for the Fort Benning Schools. In 2003, he joined the DoDDS-Pacific school system as an Elementary Systems Specialist. When he returned to the States in 2003, Hughes came to the Area Service Center in Peachtree City, as a DDESS Area ISS for Educational Technology, Information Centers and Professional Technical Studies.

““I am pleased that Glenn Hughes is returning to the GA/AL District as principal of White School,” said Dr. Dell McMullen, Georgia/Alabama District Superintendent. “Because he was principal of Stowers school prior to leaving Fort Benning to serve as an Instructional Systems Specialist in the Pacific and at the Area Service Center, Glenn is excited about coming back home to support military families at the Home of the Infantry!”

A native of Columbus, GA, he began his teaching career with the Muscogee County Schools. He earned both his bachelor’s degree and his master’s degree from Columbus (GA) State University and his education specialist’s degree from Troy State University, Troy, AL He and his wife, Daphne, have one daughter, Claire, and reside in Phenix City, AL.
