PEACHTREE CITY, GA — July 5, 2007 — Dr. Elaine Beraza, Director, Department of Defense (DoD) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Cuba, (DoDDS-Cuba) announced today that Mrs. Wyonia Butler Chevis has been named principal of Lejeune High School, on Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Chevis is currently an assistant principal at Lejeune High School, a position she has held since 2005. She also served as assistant principal at both Russell and Tarawa Terrace II Elementary schools. She began her teaching career in 1976 with the Escambia County schools in Florida. In 1977 she joined the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools and came to Camp Lejeune, where she taught at Stone Street Elementary, Russell Elementary, and Brewster Middle schools.

"Lejeune High School is fortunate to have an administrator with the leadership skills and abilities that Mrs. Chevis possesses,” said Dr. Tom Hager, North Carolina District Superintendent. “She has a wonderful passion for the teaching and learning process and a great love for the students and their families.”

Originally from Church Point, LA., Chevis earned her bachelor’s of art degree in elementary education from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. She earned her master’s degree in education administration and supervision from Our Lady of Holy Cross College, in New Orleans, LA.

Chevis and her husband, retired Lt. Col. Leroy Chevis, have five children and reside in Jacksonville, N.C.
