Program Offices

Advanced Research Projects Agency (Energy ARPA-E) funds high risk, high payoff projects that will reduce America's dependence on foreign energy imports; decrease U.S. energy related emissions (including greenhouse gases); improve energy efficiency across the country and ensure that the U.S. maintains its leadership in developing and deploying advanced energy technologies.

Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE) leads national efforts to modernize the electric grid, enhance the security and reliability of the energy infrastructure, and facilitate recovery from disruptions to the energy supply. National Laboratories

Ames Laboratory is a national center for the synthesis, analysis, and engineering of rare-earth metals and their compounds.  Ames conducts fundamental research in the physical, chemical, and mathematical sciences associated with energy generation and storage. Idaho National Laboratory is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's missions in environment, energy, science and national defense. Kansas City Plant is the principal nonnuclear production site within the nuclear weapons complex. Its mission is to lead and direct the administration of its management & operating contract. The site office provides oversight and assessment, weapons programmatic guidance, security direction, and management for the NNSA Quality Assurance program. It is also actively involved in the Reimbursable Work program with other federal agencies, and the Six Sigma program that achieves operations processes through the mission of continuous improvement. Power Marketing Administration

The Federal power marketing program began in the early 1900s when power produced at Federal water projects in excess of project needs was sold in order to repay the Government's investment in the projects. Each Power Marketing Administration (PMA) is a distinct and self-contained entity within the Department of Energy, much like a wholly owned subsidiary of a corporation.

Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) serves Washington, Oregon, Idaho, parts of western Montana, and Wyoming. BPA is a federal agency headquartered in Portland, Oregon, that markets wholesale electricity and transmission to the Pacific Northwest's public and private utilities as well as to some large industries. BPA provides about half the electricity used in the Northwest and operates over three-fourths of the region's high-voltage transmission. Southeastern Power Administration (SEPA), headquartered in Elberton, Georgia, has the responsibility to market all the electric power and energy generated at reservoirs operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the states of West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Power is marketed to customers in all of these states. In addition, power is marketed to customers in southern Illinois. Southwestern Power Administration (SWPA) markets hydroelectric power in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisana, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas from 24 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers multipurpose dams. By law, SWPA's power is marketed and delivered primarily to public bodies such as rural electric cooperatives and municipal utilities. SWPA has over one hundred such "preference" customre. Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) markets and delivers reliable, cost-based hydroelectric power and related services within a 15-state region of the central and western United States. WAPA's role is to market and transmit electricity from multi-use water projects. WAPA's transmission system carries electricity from 55 hydro power plants operated by the Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the International Boundary and Water Commission. Operations Offices

Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO) manages the DOE's National TRU Program Office and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) facility operations, as well as serving as an international center for the study of waste management. The CBFO coordinates the transuranic program at waste-generating sites, national laboratories, and other participants involved in developing the permanent disposal of transuranic radioactive waste. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Service Center (previously the Albuquerque Operations Office), providing procurement, human resources and other support services to the site offices, will be established using the expertise of the former operations offices. Nevada Site Office oversees operations for the NNSA Nevada Test Site. Due to the current moratorium on nuclear weapons testing, the primary mission of this site office is to support stockpile stewardship, environmental management, emergency response, and technology diversification. Oak Ridge Operations (ORO) oversees the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Y-12 National Security Complex, and the East Tennessee Technology Park at DOE's Oak Ridge Reservation, as well as the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education and the American Museum of Science and Energy. Ohio Field Office oversees the operations of five Department of Energy sites to ensure safe, cost-effective, and environmentally sound closure and long-term stewardship of facilities designated to it by the Secretary of Energy.  Richland Operations Office oversees the cleanup of the Department of Energy's Hanford facility. Richland has reorganized its work and set its sights on getting key pieces of the Hanford cleanup completed over the next ten years. Rocky Mountain Oilfield Testing Center (RMOTC) is an energy testing center that partners with industry to test new ideas and products that lead to increased recovery or reduced operating costs. RMOTC's test site is a 10,000-acre U.S. Department of Energy facility located within Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 3 (NPR-3), also known as Teapot Dome Oil Field. Rocky Flats is a DOE owned cleanup and closure site operated by Kaiser-Hill Company under an accelerated closure contract. The Rocky Flats mission includes the now completed special nuclear material management and shipment, nuclear deactivation and decommissioning, waste management and shipment, environmental cleanup and site closure. When cleanup is complete, the site will be transitioned to a National Wildlife Refuge managed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service. 

Savannah River Operations Office, located in Aiken, South Carolina on the Savannah River, oversees the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site. Its three mission areas are: Nuclear Weapons Stockpile Stewardship, Nuclear Materials Stewardship, and Environmental Stewardship.
