Major General George C. Lynch is commander of the Air Force Commissary Service at Kelly Air Force Base, Texas. The Commissary Service provides food and related merchandise to the Air Force community through the operation of troop support and resale store activities throughout the Air Force.

General Lynch was born in 1930, in Fairbanks, Alaska, and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, where he graduated from high school in 1948. He received his bachelor of arts degree in history from Duke University in 1953 and a master of science degree in public administration from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., in 1964. The general also completed Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.

He earned his commission through the Air Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps program, entered the Air Force Reserve in August 1953 and was called to active duty in November 1953.

After graduating from Intelligence School at Lowry Air Force Base, Colo., he served as an intelligence analysis officer and management analysis officer at Headquarters U.S. Air Force Security Service, Kelly Air Force Base, until October 1955. He transferred to Shiroi Air Base, Japan, in November 1955 and served as management analysis officer and data automation officer with the 6920th Security Wing. He accompanied the wing when it was relocated to Wheeler Air Force Base, Hawaii, and served as management analysis officer and assistant comptroller.

In October 1959 General Lynch returned to Security Service headquarters as chief, Programs and Progress Analysis Division in the Directorate of Management Analysis, and later became assistant for plans and systems in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Comptroller. He left in July 1963 to attend Air Command and Staff College, where he was the outstanding distinguished graduate of the class of 1964. He again returned to Security Service headquarters in July 1964 as director of management analysis.

General Lynch was assigned to Karamursel Common Defense Installation, Turkey, in July 1967 as comptroller of the 6933rd Support Group. In August 1969 he transferred to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as a management analysis staff officer in the Directorate of Management and Analysis. In May 1970 he was named chief of the Management Information Division in the Directorate of Management Analysis.

From August 1971 to November 1973, the general was assigned to Headquarters Air Force Communications Service, Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, Mo., where he served as deputy chief of staff, comptroller. He served at Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, as deputy chief of staff, comptroller, from November 1973 to January 1976.

In February 1976 General Lynch become deputy director of budget at Air Force headquarters. He transferred to Denver in June 1979, when he was named assistant comptroller of the Air Force for accounting and finance, commander of the Air Force Accounting and Finance Center, and assistant director, Defense Security Assistance Agency for Security Assistance Accounting. He assumed his present command in February 1982.

His military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters.

He was promoted to major general Feb. 1, 1980, with date of rank July 1, 1976.
