Brigadier General Henry Clay Dorris is commander of the USAF Medical Center Keesler Air Force Base, Miss.
General Dorris was born in Morton, Miss. He graduated from Central High School, Jackson, Miss., in 1929, and from Millsaps College, Miss., in 1934. Following graduation from Tulane University of Louisiana School of Medicine, in 1938, he completed his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, La.
He was commissioned in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1935 and entered active military duty in November 1940. He was assigned as Regimental Surgeon with the 155th Infantry Regiment at Camp Blanding, Fla. During World War II in 1942 he went to the China-Burma-India Theater where he was assigned to the 181st General Hospital as Chief of Medical Service. In March 1945 he went to Camp Ellis, Ill., where he again served as chief of medical service.
In February 1946 he was released from active military service and resumed private practice in Winona, Miss. During that time he was a member of the Reserve. He returned to active military service in August 1948 and was assigned as chief of medical service and commander of the 297th General Hospital, Fitzsimons, Denver, Colo. During 1949 he was senior resident in Internal Medicine, Fitzsimons General Hospital, Denver.
General Dorris went to Keesler Air Force Base for the first time in 1950 and was assigned as chief of Professional Services; chief of Medical Service; and internist at the USAF Hospital Keesler.
In May 1953 he went to Japan where he served as commander of the USAF Hospital Nagoya and internist. He was also a consultant in internal medicine for the Far East Air Forces and Fifth Air Force.
General Dorris returned to the United States in November 1955 to assume duty as commander of the USAF Hospital Brookley, Brookley Air Force Base, Ala., and surgeon for Mobile Air Materiel Area. From June 1961 to July 1964 he served as vice commander and internist at Wilford Hall USAF Hospital, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
In July 1964 he was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C., serving first as chief professional consultant to the surgeon general and chief of Consultants Division; then as director of Professional Services in the Office of the Surgeon General. He was assigned in July 1968 as surgeon for Headquarters Command, U.S. Air Force, and commander of Malcolm Grow USAF Hospital at Andrews Air Force Base, Md.
General Dorris became commander of the USAF Medical Center Keesler at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., in July 1969.
His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon.
His scientific and professional interests include internal, aerospace and industrial medicine. He has specialized in pulmonary, infectious and occupational diseases. He was assistant resident, Internal Medicine, Grady Memorial Hospital, Emory University, Atlanta, Ga., 1940; senior resident, Internal Medicine, Fitzsimons General Hospital, Denver, Colo., 1949; and attended the Primary Course Aerospace Medicine, USAF School of Aerospace Medicine, 1947; Postgraduate Course, Basic Medical Science Research Methods, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, 1953.
He served as the U.S. Air Force delegate to the American Medical Association, and as governor of the American College of Physicians for the U.S. Air Force. He is a past president of the Air Force Society of Physicians and is a member of several professional medical societies. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
His hometown is Jackson, Miss.
He was promoted to the temporary grade of brigadier general effective March 20, 1967, with date of rank, March 18, 1967.
