Brigadier General Robert E. Buhrow is the assistant deputy director of deployment operations, Joint Deployment Agency at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.
General Buhrow was born in 1930, in St. Joseph, Mo. He attended the University of Houston from 1947 to 1950 and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Texas in 1958 under the Air Force Institute of Technology program. He received a master of science degree from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., in 1966. He is also a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., and the Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa.
General Buhrow enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in December l950. Following short tours at Lackland and Perrin Air Force Bases, Texas, he entered pilot training at Bartow Air Base, Fla., and received his wings and commission at Bryan Air Force Base, Texas, in June 1952. He completed fighter gunnery training at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., in September 1952 and was assigned to the 8th Fighter-Bomber Wing (later 8th Tactical Fighter Wing), Suwon Air Base, South Korea.
From June 1953 to September 1957, General Buhrow was a flight instructor at Greenville Air Force Base, Miss., and Craig Air Force Base, Ala. In August 1958 after graduation from the University of Texas, General Buhrow was assigned to the 7206th Support Group, Athens, Greece, as a budget officer. In September 1961 he transferred to Moody Air Force Base, Ga., again as a flight instructor. From July l965 to June l966, he attended the Air Command and Staff College.
General Buhrow completed F-4 training at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., in December 1966. He then returned to the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, which had relocated at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, where he flew l26 combat missions.
From September 1967 until July 1970, General Buhrow served as a faculty member of the Air Command and Staff College. He attended the Army War College from July 1970 to June 1971, and then was assigned to the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Research and Development, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as chief of the Aircraft Missile Program Division.
In September 1973 General Buhrow returned to South Korea as vice commander of the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing at Kunsan Air Base. In August 1974 he transferred to Germany, where he served as vice commander of the 36th Tactical Fighter Wing at Bitburg Air Base until July 1975. He then assumed command of the 52nd Tactical Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem Air Base.
The general returned to the United States as chief of the House of Representatives Liaison Office, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force Legislative Division from June 1977 until June 1978. He then became deputy commander of the 22nd North American Air Defense Command Region, with headquarters at Canadian Forces Base, North Bay, Ontario, Canada. Commanded by a Canadian Forces major general, the 22nd is the largest North American Air Defense Command Region encompassing much of eastern and all of northern Canada. General Buhrow was also the senior U.S. military officer in Canada. He assumed his present duties in July 1980.
General Buhrow is a command pilot with more than 6,400 hours flying time. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster and Air Medal with 13 oak leaf clusters.
He was promoted to brigadier general Feb. 2, 1978, with date of rank Jan. 18, 1978.
