Brigadier General Michael E. Fortney is the Director, Operations and Nuclear Support directorate, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, Fort Belvoir, Va. DTRA safeguards America and its allies from weapons of mass destruction (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high-yield explosives) by providing capabilities to reduce, eliminate, and counter the threat, and mitigate its effects.
The Operations and Nuclear Support directorate is responsible for coordinating across the agency to bring ready solutions to capability needs. It provides warfighter support to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Combatant Commanders, and the military services to engage the threat and challenges posed to the U.S., its forces and allies by weapons of mass destruction. The directorate conducts and manages Department of Defense-level nuclear surety functions related to the safety, security, control and reliability of the national strategic deterrent.
General Fortney enlisted in the Air Force in 1978 and served as an enlisted reconnaissance photo interpreter for over seven years in various assignments. He received his commission as a second lieutenant through Officer Training School in 1986. He has commanded at the squadron, group, and wing levels and has a broad range of operational tours in intercontinental ballistic missile operations, maintenance, test and space launch. He commanded the Air Force ICBM Flight Test Squadron at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., the Air Force's largest Minuteman and Peacekeeper ICBM operations group at F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo., and the Air Force's largest ICBM wing at Malmstrom AFB, Mont. As Chief of B-2 bomber sustainment at Tinker AFB, Okla., he oversaw all logistical sustainment activities supporting the B-2 Spirit weapon system and as Vice Wing Commander, Vandenberg AFB, Calif., oversaw space, ICBM and missile defense launches on the western range.
The general's staff assignments include Air Division executive officer duties, wing-level training and emergency war order production and training, CINC USSTRATCOM Special Assistant and legislative liaison duties, and USSTRATCOM Global Operations Directorate operations and planning.
Prior to his current position, General Fortney was assigned to the Global Operations Directorate, United States Strategic Command, Offutt AFB, Neb., and commanded the 341st Missile Wing, Malmstrom AFB, Mont.
