Major General Richard E. Steere is commander of the Armament Division, Air Force Systems Command, Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.
General Steere was born in Laurel, Neb., and raised in Inglewood, Calif., where he graduated from high school. He received both bachelor and master of science degrees in mechanical engineering from Stanford University in 1955 and 1962, respectively, and the degree of engineer in 1963.
After receiving his commission through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Stanford University, General Steere completed basic pilot training at Marana Air Base, Ariz., then advanced training at Greenville Air Force Base, Miss., where he received his pilot wings in 1957. He next attended F-84F combat crew training at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., and F-100 training at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.
The general completed flying training in December 1958 and was assigned as an F-100 combat crewmember with the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing, Chaumont Air Base, France. He transferred with the wing to Royal Air Force Station Lakenheath, England, for the remainder of that overseas tour of duty.
He returned to the United States in 1960 and served briefly at George Air Force Base, Calif., before attending Stanford University through the Air Force Institute of Technology program. General Steere then was assigned to Air Force Systems Command's Titan III program at Los Angeles Air Force Station, Calif. In 1965 he completed F-105 transition training at Nellis Air Force Base and was assigned to the 18th Tactical Fighter Wing, Kadena Air Base, Okinawa. Flying F-105 Thunderchiefs, the general completed 100 combat missions over North Vietnam as both a strike and Wild Weasel pilot.
In 1968 he was assigned to Aeronautical Systems Division's life support systems program at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. After graduating from the Air War College in 1972, he was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as program element monitor for the F-15. In 1974 he was selected as military assistant to the assistant secretary of the Air Force for research and development.
General Steere returned to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1976 and served successively as director of the Remotely Piloted Vehicles Systems Program Office, deputy for propulsion and deputy for tactical systems. In May 1983 he transferred to Eglin Air Force Base as vice commander of the Armament Division. In August 1984 he was assigned as deputy chief of staff for systems at Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md. He assumed his present command in January 1987.
The general is a command pilot with more than 3,000 flying hours. His military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with nine oak leaf clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal. He also wears the Space Badge.
He was promoted to major general April 1, 1985, with date of rank March 1, 1981.
