Ira David Snyder was born in El Paso, Ill., in 1904. He graduated from the University of Ill., with a bachelor of science degree in education in 1929.

Entering Primary Flying School on Feb. 23, 1931, General Snyder graduated from Advanced Flying School on Feb. 26, 1932, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Reserve. Assigned with the Eighth Pursuit Group at Langley Field, Va., he was released from active duty a year later.

The next six years General Snyder was a partner in the retail hardware business in Barstow, Calif., and from 1939 to 1941 he was a flight supervisor at the Allan Hancock College of Aeronautics at Santa Maria, Calif.

Recalled to active duty on March 3, 1941, General Snyder was assistant supervisor of the Air Corps Primary Flying School at Santa Maria, Calif. That Sept. 26 he became assistant to the assistant chief of staff for Materiel of the Western Flying Training command there, moving in that capacity to Fort Worth, Texas in July 1943. A year later he was named assistant chief of staff for Supply of that command.

Joining the Air Transport Command in December 1946, the general assumed command of Keflavik Air Base, Iceland. That April 1 he was named assistant chief of staff for Materiel at Fort Pepperrell, Newfoundland, assuming command of the base on July 24, 1947. The following June General Snyder assumed command of the 1225th Air Base Group there. Entering the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Washington, D.C., in July 1949 he graduated a year later.

Transferring to the Tactical Air Command, General Snyder was appointed deputy chief of staff for Materiel at TAC headquarters, Langley Air Force Base, Va., becoming deputy for Materiel there on April 14, 1955.

Reassigned to the Air Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, on Aug. 1, 1956, General Snyder became inspector general of AMC.

His decorations include the Legion of Merit and Order of Icelandic Falcon (Knight Commander). He is rated a command pilot.
