Donald F. Stace was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., in 1900. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., with a Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned a second lieutenant of Coast Artillery July 2, 1920.

His first commissioned service was at Fort Monroe, Va., where he was detailed as a student officer in the Coast Artillery School in September 1920. Following his graduation in July 1921, he was assigned to the Air Service Pilots School at Carlstrom Field, Fla. He completed training in December 1921, and in January 1922 was assigned to the 94th Pursuit Squadron at Ellington Field, Texas, for additional flying training.

The following April he became assistant air service supply officer at Ellington Field, and in July 1922 transferred to Selfridge Field, Mich., for duty with the Second Air Park, First Pursuit Group. From October 1922 to April 1923, he attended Air Service Engineering School at McCook Field, Ohio, following which he returned to Selfridge Field for duty with the 57th Service Squadron.

In February 1925, he was ordered to Luke Field, Hawaii, for duty with the Sixth Pursuit Squadron. Upon his return to the United States in April 1928, he was assigned to Wright Field, Ohio, for duty in the Field Service Section of the Air Corps Materiel Division. He became chief of the Miscellaneous Supply Branch of the Field Service Section a year later. In July 1931, he entered the Air Corps Engineering School at Wright Field, Ohio, from which he graduated in June 1932. The following month he became assistant depot supply officer at San Antonio Air Depot, Duncan Field, Texas.

In July 1934, he was assigned as Air Corps station supply officer at Brooks Field, Texas, and a year later became officer in charge of Navy Liaison and assistant to the chief of Materiel Liaison Section, Supply Division, in the office the Chief of Air Corps in Washington, D.C. He was ordered to Maxwell Field, Ala., in September 1938, where he attended the Air Corps Tactical School. Following his graduation in May 1939, he remained at Maxwell Field for a brief tour of duty as post recreation officer. The following September he went to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he graduated from the Command and General Staff School in February 1940.

He was then assigned to the Air Corps Western Procurement District in Santa Monica, Calif., for duty as Air Corps factory representative for North American Aviation, Inc., in Inglewood, Calif. From June 1942 to April 1943, he served as the chief of the Production Division and technical executive of the Western Air Force Procurement District in Santa Monica, and later Los Angeles, Calif.

In June 1945, he went overseas as Director of Supply from the AAF in the Pacific Ocean Areas. In August of the same year, he became Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff, A-4, U.S. Army Strategic Air Forces. On Oct. 8, 1945, he was assigned to the 20th Air Force, and two days later was made commanding general of the Guam Air Depot, which was redesignated the Sixth Air Service Area Command on Feb. 10, 1946, and further renamed the Guam Air Materiel Area (Prov) on Aug. 1, 1946.

He became commanding general of the Seventh Air Force in October 1946, and on July 25, 1947, reported to AAF headquarters for duty as chief of the Procurement and Industrial Planning Division of AC/AS-4. On Oct. 10, 1947, after the establishment of USAF headquarters, he was appointed chief of the Procurement Division in the Office of the Director of Procurement and Industrial Planning.

In December 1947, he was appointed commanding general of the Middletown Air Materiel Area, with headquarters at Olmstead Field (Middletown), Pa. General Stace became chief of the Los Angeles Air Force Procurement Field Office in October 1950. The following March he was designated Commanding General, Western Air Procurement District, Los Angeles.

General Stace became a patient at Letterman Army Hospital, San Francisco, Calif., in July 1951.

His decorations include the Legion of Merit. He is rated a command pilot, combat observer and aircraft observer.
