Brigadier General Berry William Rowe is commander of the Air Weather Service, with headquarters at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. He manages a worldwide system of military weather and space environmental facilities. A numbered air force-level technical service organization assigned to the Military Airlift Command, AWS provides staff and operational environmental services to the Air Force, Army and designated Department of Defense agencies.
General Rowe was born in 1924, in Kanarra, Utah, and graduated from Las Vegas High School, Las Vegas, Nev., in 1942. He earned his bachelor of science degree in political science from Utah State University in 1949, and his bachelor of science degree in meteorology from Penn State University in 1952. He is a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College.
General Rowe began his military career in the enlisted corps of the Army. During World War II, he served with the 17th Airborne Division and the Corps of Engineers.
He received his commission in 1949 as a distinguished military graduate of the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps program at Utah State University.
In 1950, after completion of the Air Tactical School, General Rowe was assigned to Air Weather Service. His subsequent duty with AWS has included assignments at every organizational echelon. He served as Squadron Reserve Coordinator, Lowry Air Force Base, Colo., from May 1950 to August 1951, when he entered Penn State University.
After graduation in August 1952, he was assigned as a detachment weather officer at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. Later in the year, he went to Okinawa, where he provided forecaster support for B-29 operations. In November 1953 General Rowe became wing manpower officer at Tokyo, Japan, and remained in this position until January 1956. He rotated to Washington, D.C., and served as a detachment weather officer at Bolling Air Force Base until July 1956, at which time he became a member of the Group Forecasting/Technical Services at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., and later at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. He entered the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in July 1960.
From July 1961 to July 1964, General Rowe served as Assistant Staff Weather officer for the Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. His next assignment was as director, Long Range Plans, Headquarters AWS, at Scott Air Force Base. He held this position from July 1964 to January 1968, when he became deputy assistant for weather in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Programs and Resources, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.
In December 1971 General Rowe left for Southeast Asia where he served as commander of the 1st Weather Group at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. In June 1972 he became commander of the 10th Weather Squadron in Thailand.
General Rowe returned to Scott Air Force Base in November 1972 to serve as inspector general for Headquarters AWS. In May 1973 he was transferred to Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., where he served as vice commander, 3d Weather Wing until February 1974 when he became commander of the wing. In July 1975 General Rowe again returned to Scott, this time as vice commander, AWS, and in August 1975 he became commander.
His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, and from the Republic of Vietnam the Armed Forces Honor Medal, Air Service Medal, and the Gallantry Cross.
He was promoted to the grade of brigadier general on Dec. 15, 1975, with date of rank Dec. 3, 1975.
