For better Android typing: SwiftKey 3

For better Android typing: SwiftKey 3

One area where I think the iPhone has held its own against Android phones I've used is the responsiveness of the touch-screen keyboard, but one area where I think Android has shown more innovation better predictive typing. Which is why I was happy to see the release of SwiftKey 3 today.

The software one-ups the predictive typing abilities of Android's built-in keyboard, learning from your own typing to offer not just the next letters in a word, but also the next word, too. Hitting the spacebar completes the action. (When you start typing, the first word it suggests more

Belkin debuts Slingbox competitor: @TV Plus

Belkin debuts Slingbox competitor: @TV Plus

I'm not sure I like the name, but Belkin has made a surprise entry into the place-shifting arena with @TV Plus, a $149.99 set-top box that allows your to stream video from your home TV to your tablet, smartphone, or laptop over WiFi or a 3G/4G cellular connection.

Belkin makes no bones about it: this is a director competitor to Slingbox, which was acquired by EchoStar a few years ago and has languished a bit while maintaining the dominant position in the niche place-shifting market.

Like the Slingbox, @TV Plus works with both standard and high-definition programming more

Rumor Has It: New Xbox launch timed for 2013 holidays? (video) play button

As if actual Microsoft product launches haven't been in the news enough this week (ahem, Surface tablet and Windows Phone 8), rumors of the roadmap for the long-anticipated new Xbox are heating up.

A PowerPoint presentation posted to NeoGAF forums claims to divulge Microsoft's secret product launch plans. No, not the launch codes -- this isn't a nuclear crisis, though the excitement among Xbox gamers is verging on nuclear. (See what I did there?) The document has NOT been authenticated, and Microsoft is mum on the issue, but its contents are in line with previous rumors.

Windows Phone 8: Everything you need to know (FAQ)

Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 8 today, its next-generation smartphone operating system. But what exactly does that entail, when can we expect to see devices, and what does it mean for people who have Windows phones now?

What are hardware changes?
Near-Field Communication (NFC), support for multicore processors (like dual-core and quad-core), new screen resolutions (like 1,280x720-pixel HD), and expandable memory slots are the biggest news in terms of hardware changes.

What's with the new start screen?
Microsoft's redesigned start screen (pictured above) spans the width of the screen now. You'll be able to resize each individual live tile from the start screen to one of three sizes. There's also support for new color themes, which Microsoft didn't list.

Qualcomm confirms Snapdragon S4 processor for Windows Phone

Support for multi-core processors was one of the biggest pieces of news to come from Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 unveiling today. Qualcomm has just confirmed that it will supply its dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus chipset to power future Windows phones.

The Snapdragon S4 is Qualcomm's fastest chip to date and goes up to clock speeds of 1.7GHz per core. It currently powers four of the U.S. market's fastest phones, the HTC One X, HTC Evo 4G LTE, HTC One S, and the Samsung Galaxy S3. Both phones earned CNET Editors' Choice awards, in part due more

iBattz Armor: Another extended-battery iPhone tough case arrives

A few weeks back, I wrote about how Mophie was coming out with the Juice Pack Pro, a rugged version of its extended-battery case for the iPhone 4/4S. Now iBattz has unveiled the Mojo Armor, its spin on a ultraprotective extended-battery case.

Compared with theJuice Pack Pro's integrated 2,500 mAh battery (that more than doubles the battery life of your iPhone), the iBattz includes two swappable 1700 mAh battery modules, which brings its total up to 3400 mAh. iBattz says it's, "shock, drop, dust, splash and child-proof." It comes in black, gray, or purple.
