Trion Worlds taking over End of Nations development
With End of Nations' development in trouble due to mass layoffs at Petroglyph Studios, Trion Worlds has decided to step in to save the day -- or at least finish the game. The End of Nations team announced last night that the game's being brought in-house to its publisher for the final stretch of development prior to launch.

"We are committed to delivering the top-notch product we know this game can be," the team wrote, "and we are looking forward to welcoming you back into the testing phase of the game to help get it there."

Trion promised that it was making changes due to player feedback from the beta and has plans to make the learning curve more friendly, update the user interface, and put a nice coat of polish over the entire game.

The Summoner's Guidebook IPL's League of Legends a paragon of tournaments
I feel a bit tuckered out from League of Legends tournaments. I love the game, and I love the pro scene, but sometimes I'm just not in the mood to watch hours and hours of gameplay and then try to digest it all. As a columnist, I have to watch tournaments with a different eye than a normal spectator, which can be exhausting, so I wasn't really looking forward to IPL 5. My favorite team (Dignitas) wasn't playing, and all my tournament hype was spent watching the Season 2 finals.

However, IPL did a lot to keep my interest. Normally, I'm not really into IGN's LoL coverage, as it's heavy on entertainment and presentation value and low on information. This time, not only were the matches interesting, but the format was excellent, the commentary was good, and the space between matches was filled with tons of informative content. I really couldn't have asked for a better LoL tournament to end the year. Every other tournament this year paled in comparison.

Why I Play DC Universe Online
Batman.

He's why I initially played DC Universe Online. He's why I bought the collector's edition pre-launch, and he's generally why I got worked up into a sweaty lather of fanboy expectation that couldn't possibly be met by an MMO with a finite budget.

A couple of years on, I've rediscovered DCUO, and now the reason I play it (a lot) boils down to three letters: SOE.

Bigpoint staff have voted to organize under the banner of the Ver.di trade union, according to GamesIndustry.biz. The move comes after the October layoffs of 80 employees from the free-to-play browser giant's Hamburg, Germany office, and Bigpoint will no longer be able to make staffing cuts "without first consulting the organization."

Bigpoint also issued a press release this week stating that 300 million users have registered across its 65-game portfolio.

uo huge bug fixing update see team email, thank tipster
Get your scrollin' finger ready: Ultima Online just got a whole bucket of fixes and updates posted to the test server. If you're tired of your fish pies not being stackable, of mushrooms exploding under your house, or of gargoyles activating their stone form mid-flight, this is the patch for you! Lava Lobster fishing has been fixed, hats have stopped twitching, and gargoyle aprons have all been returned to their proper hue.

At long last, golems can no longer be used to exploit combat training, and vendors are seeing some big changes. Rather than increasing their fees once per day, vendors will charge incrementally over time. They'll also give players a grace period before heading out after running out of funds, and all vending penalties have been abolished. Hit up the official patch notes for the lengthy list, if only so you can learn that "Robin's Egg candy will no longer fill the tummy of the eater."

Ubisoft is working on a AAA MMO according to the internet sleuths at PlayStation Lifestyle. The site unearthed a mention of the top secret project in the LinkedIn profile of Massive Entertainment's Marc Cartwright as well as a call out for a lead level designer on Massive's own website.

No platform details have been forthcoming, nor has any mention of an IP, setting, or general subject matter. Fan speculation has centered on Ubisoft's uber-successful Assassin's Creed franchise as well as new critical darling (and Massive project) Far Cry 3.

Relics of Annorath sundown
Here at Massively we loves us some sandbox MMOs, and we like to think that we've seen, played, or at least heard about all of them. Occasionally we're wrong, and luckily our most excellent and admirable readership is there to pick up the slack. Case in point is a new (to us) title called Relics of Annorath.

The fantasy shindig is accepting alpha signups, but more interesting for the purposes of this news post is a selection of gameplay vids viewable via YouTube. Judging by said clips, seasonal changes and realistic weather are an integral part the game (also, rock slides). Relics of Annorath's website touts native Linux support and complex economic, guild, faction, and political systems. We've embedded a six-minute tech demo teaser after the break.

Art of glitch indiegogo
A lot of things suck about the closing of a game. There's the obvious things like the people out of work, but there's a bunch of other sucky stuff too, like all the art that went into the game getting thrown out. Some of the folks from Tiny Speck are trying to make sure that Glitch's closing doesn't mean that the game's art is lost forever. They made an Indiegogo campaign to get funds for publishing a book of the art of Glitch.

The campaign is sitting pretty at over $27,000 raised at the time of this writing (the target was $17,000), but there are 45 days left for you to get in on the reward action.

A couple of months ago we reported on Riot's decision to assemble a 30-man development team to address adolescent behavioral issues in League of Legends.

Now, hot on the heels of a high-profile banning incident involving Team Dignitas pro Christian Rivera, Gamasutra has interviewed LoL lead producer Travis George about the Player Behavior and Justice team (known internally as PB&J), which includes both game designers and academic researchers.

George and Riot are hopeful that incentivizing good behavior and throwing a couple of PhDs (in neuroscience and behavioral psychology) into the mix will enable the firm to get a handle on the MOBA title's nefarious community, which was described as a "worldwide problem" in recent player surveys. "You can apply really good research and science techniques to almost anything," George explains. "The trick is just finding what you want to actually spend the time on, and that's where the sentiment for players comes in as a huge guiding factor to that."

Storybricks shifting gears, partnering with 'several studios'

Namaste Entertainment is shifting gears on its Storybricks project. The company has posted an update letter on its website, and in a nutshell the firm will be moving away from development on a standalone product and focusing on partnerships with other game studios.

The Kingdom of Default test project is being shelved. Namaste says it was "not enough of a game for traditional MMO audiences, too complex for casual players and too much of a game for educational uses." Namaste does have "several projects underway," but due to NDAs the company "cannot be as open as we have been in the past."

Storybricks is an AI initiative that aims to upgrade the capabilities of game NPCs. Namaste "designed and built an emotional intelligence engine in order to breathe life into virtual characters. They have their own goals and moods; they interact among themselves and take decisions on their own. The story no longer revolves solely around scripted behavior; game worlds can now be rich and complex."

The Daily Grind: Do you play MMO CCGs?

EverQuest II Legends of Norrath
SOE is making some changes to the Legends of Norrath collectible card game embedded inside its EverQuest II MMORPG. As it stands now, EQII gold members get free card packs for each month that they maintain the gold membership, and these freebie packs stack up over time.

When the changes go live, players will no longer receive free packs on a monthly basis unless they actually log into LoN during the month in question. Why does anyone care? Well, because the free packs occasionally reward you with loot cards that can be redeemed for EQII items (mounts, cloaks, houses, etc.). As Feldon at EQ2Wire reports, the tweak is "intended to drive players to actually play Legends of Norrath rather than using it as an automatic loot delivery system."

What say you, Massively readers? Do you actually play MMO-related CCGs or do you simply ignore them (and hope you get a rare card for free)?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Free for All: Why I prefer primitive graphics over realistic imagery

There are a few divisive topics that I can bring up in my columns that will be guaranteed to not only bring in the comments but light a fire to the comments section. I've learned that browser choice is a hot topic. PvP versus PvE will always cause players to erupt. Mac or PC? That topic will not end in civil discussion.

If I really want to hurt a reader's feelings, cause insults to be hurled at me, and provoke readers to accuse me of attempting to bring game development -- real game development -- to its knees, I can bring up graphics and gaming power. As in gaming rig. But I'll be brave this week and explain just why I prefer more primitive graphics over high-end visuals.

Enter at Your Own Rift A peek at Update 21
It's been only a few weeks since RIFT's the Storm Legion expansion has launched, but believe it or not, update 2.1 is coming already. It's like that feeling you get when you've just overstuffed yourself with turkey and suddenly Grandma appears with a tray full of dessert. Bits of the update recently hit the test server, and since some of it is Yule-themed, this update is probably due to hit the live servers soon. There's a surprising amount of new content and game changes, especially considering we're fresh off the heels of the expansion. As much as I love Crucia constantly screaming in my head, I ventured to the test server to check things out. For this week's Enter at Your Own Rift I've rounded up some of the highlights. Let's take a peek!

Guild Wars 2's data and design in detail

ArenaNet goes into detail about data and design
MMO player and writer Ravious over at Kill Ten Rats knows how to ask the hard questions. Questions that other journalists are afraid to ask. Questions like, "If you were omniscient with regard to all corollary Guild Wars 2 data (including player emotion, all chat including voice chat, current snacks eaten, etc.), what crazy thing would you most like to know?"

Happily for the Guild Wars 2 fanbase, he also asks much more practical questions, and he directed some of those questions at ArenaNet's Izzy Cartwright. He even got some answers! Cartwright talked about how ArenaNet's ability to track players led to the implementation of certain dynamic events, meant to split up the player population in a map, which would trigger when there were too many players in an area. Another benefit of the team's data gathering is the ability to see where players are dying most often in order to adjust content difficulty as necessary. The economy is especially dependent on player activity, and Cartwright says that the team keeps a very close eye on item fluctuations to be sure that a relatively healthy stat is maintained.

Read the full interview over at KTR. If data, design, and programming really get your gears turning, consider checking out ArenaNet programmer Cameron Dunn's GDC talk on that subject.

Hopefully you didn't just start crying again.
Last week was painful, not just for me but for a lot of you was well. I'm touched by the number of comments I received on last week's article, and I can understand why a lot of you thought that this was curtains for the column as well as for the game. It was a sad ending, with a note of hope almost buried by all of the crushing emotion. You and I lost a friend that's been with us for more than eight years; it's hard to be optimistic.

But I'm still here. And I'm still the same person I was a week ago, if somewhat diminished by loss. And now it's time to move along.

I've written the last word there is for me to write on the subject of City of Heroes, but as it turns out, I still have a lot more to say about the genre. This probably doesn't come as much of a surprise to regular readers. I'm a guy who loves superheroes, and losing a home hurts, but it doesn't mean I'm hanging up my cape. It means that I need to find a new home. And I'd be remiss in not asking anyone else along for the ride.

The Elder Scrolls Online regales us with the history of a king
Pour a tall mug o' mead, my friends, and prepare to be entranced with the tales of The Elder Scrolls Online. ZeniMax's scribes have crafted a particularly cunning tale of Jorunn the Skald-King for you to enjoy.

As Jorunn is one of the key figures in TESO, we figure it's a good thing to keep tabs on him and his history. The short story tells of his upbringing and ascension to the throne of the Ebonheart Pact. The team indicated that we should expect two more stories covering the other faction leaders.

Give the short story a read and let us know whether this man is the type of fictional character that your fictional character will swear fealty to or not!

Choose my Adventure Let the new story begin
Oh, Choose my Adventure, it's been a long time; I've missed you!

Several years have passed since I started this little column up, and I've had a blast reading each writer's version of how to play through games chosen by you. Now I'm ready to jump back in and get my feet wet in another round of reader-guided adventures, starting this week!

For those who read my articles in the column's early days, you may remember that I like to make a bit of an RP story for my character's journey. I'll be doing that again this time by forging the narrative around a lone-wolf main character. So I've chosen seven games that I think would do well in that scenario, all games that haven't been done in a recent CMA. This week, you'll choose the game, but from there, you'll choose more about how I play and which direction the story's plot will turn.
