Outstanding Chemistry and Materials Research Highlighted in C&E News

Congratulations to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Yingge Du, Igor Lyubinetsky, Zdenek Dohnalek, and Greg Schenter along with their co-authors on having their research featured in C&E News concentrates [February 18, 2008, page 36]. Publicity in this magazine aids PNNL and our clients when discussing the value and funding of our research.

Hot Oxygen: Du, Lyubinestsky, and Dohnalek found that when an oxygen molecule impacts on the surface of the catalyst titanium dioxide, one atom remains stationary while the other moves on, probably using energy from the stationary atom. Scientists around the world are exploring this catalyst to harness sunlight to power the manufacture of hydrogen fuel. This research was supported by DOE's Office of Basic Energy Sciences, within the Office of Science.

Cool Attractions: Schenter and collaborators at Johns Hopkins University and Heriot-Watt University determined that electrons spur the reaction between ammonia and hydrochloric acid in the gas phase. The findings may help scientists someday precisely control chemistry in systems ranging from biology to energy. This work was supported by the National Science Foundation and DOE's Offices of Basic Energy Sciences and Biological & Environmental Research, part of the Office of Science.
