Magnetic Materials Group

Welcome

Robert Shull

Robert Shull,
Group Leader

The Magnetic Materials Group is dedicated to the study of advanced magnetic and super-conducting materials to characterize their properties and performance, and to promote their economical processing and efficient use. The group's mission is to (1) provide the nation with the magnetic measurement methods, standards, and data required for the understanding and control of processing, structure, properties, and performance of magnetic materials, and to (2) assist industry in the development of technology needed to improve quality, modernize manufacturing processes, and facilitate commercialization of advanced magnetic materials.

Group Competence

  • Thin Film Metrology

  • Bulk Magnetization Metrology

  • Domain Dynamics

  • Micromagnetic Modeling

  • Absolute Magnetization Measurements

  • Magnetocaloric Effects

Programs/Projects

Magnetic Nanostructures for post-CMOS Electronics—Our goal is to address the metrology of magnetic effects at the nanoscale level. Nanomagnet arrays form the basis for major data storage technologies, notably magnetoresistive random access memory …

Magnetic Nanoparticle Metrology—We are developing best practice metrology for characterization of magnetic nanoparticle systems (e.g. blocking temperature, anisotropy, property distributions, T1 and T2 relaxation times, …

Magnetic Imaging—Our goal is to develop a real-time magnetic domain imaging system and apply it to technologically important systems, including data-storage and permanent magnets with increased energy products, in …

Future Directions for Magnetic Sensors— Our goal is to develop the scientific understanding needed to allow modeling and simulation to become the driving force in improving magnetic sensors and to implement the resulting advantages. …
