17,000 Years of Continuous Human Habitation
Welcome to Ocmulgee National Monument this park is a memorial to the relationship of people and natural resources. Native Americans first came here during the Paleo-Indian period hunting Ice Age mammals. Different cultures occupied this land for thousands of years. The Mississippian culture arrived here around 900 constructing mounds for their elite. Today the mounds still remain for all to see.

Ocmulgee's Earth Lodge was once used as a council chambers by the Mississippians over 1000 years ago. The floor is orginial and dates to 1015.

Did You Know?
This sword was discovered during the archeological investigation of Ocmulgee National Monument. It was found at the site of a 1700's British trading post but the handle looks like a Spanish style weapon. Archeologists will someday decipher the history of this weapon as it traveled around the world.
