Sterry has been named principal of Stowers Elementary School, at Fort Benning, Ga., in the Georgia/Alabama District. Current Principal Angie McPherson has announced her plans to retire at the conclusion of the 2011-2012 school year.

Prior to joining DoDEA in 1988, Mr. Sterry worked as a Special Education teacher for 10 years in Alabama schools. His first assignment with DoDEA was as a special education teacher at Sigonella, Sicily, Italy. In 1993 he moved to Japan to teach special needs students. He began his administrative career in 1996 when he was named assistant principal at Cummings Elementary School in Misawa, Japan, and later at Sollars Elementary School. He served for five years as principal at Yokota West Elementary School in Yokota, Japan, was Logistics Chief for the Japan District schools, and since 2008 has been principal at Cummings ES.

“Mr. Sterry comes to us with an outstanding background as an educator from the DODDs system,” said Mrs. Lois Rapp, Georgia/Alabama District Superintendent. “We are very excited to have him join our team.”

An Alabama native, Mr. Sterry earned his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Special Education from the University of Alabama in 1977, his Master’s level certification in Special Education for the Learning Disabled in 1982 and his Master’s Degree in Administration in 1983.
