PEACHTREE CITY, GA — May 5, 2009 — Dr. Elaine Beraza, Director, Department of Defense (DoD) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Cuba, (DoDDSCuba)
announced today that Mrs. Lydia Blazquez has been named principal of Antilles Elementary School, at Fort Buchanan, in the New York/Virginia/Puerto Rico District.

“Mrs. Blazquez brings a wealth of leadership experience to her new assignment which includes having mentored several prospective school administrators,” said Mr. Michael Gould, New York/Virginia/Puerto Rico District Superintendent. “Her focus on bilingual education and attention to diversity and multiculturalism will be strong assets as she serves our Antilles Elementary students.”

Blazquez grew up and was educated in Puerto Rico. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico and from the InterAmerican University. She taught at the college level at the Instituto Tecnico Commercial Junior College (ICT Junior College). She also worked in the state of Massachusetts and the District of Columbia as a teacher and administrator.

Blazquez, and her husband, who is an artist from Madrid, Spain, have one daughter.
