PEACHTREE CITY, GA — July 24, 2007 — Dr. Elaine Beraza, Director, Department of Defense (DoD) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Cuba, (DoDDS-Cuba) announced today that Dr. Bruce Jeter has been named deputy director of DDESS. He will replace Douglas Kelsey, who has accepted a position with the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA).

Currently the DDESS New York/Virginia/Puerto Rico and DoDDS-Cuba District superintendent, Jeter will take on his new responsibilities Oct. 3. Jeter joined the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) in 1992, when he became assistant principal at Irwin Middle School, at Fort Bragg, N.C. He served as principal of several DDESS schools, as an assistant superintendent and as an acting superintendent. In 2000, Jeter was named superintendent of the DoDDS-Korea schools. He assumed his current position with DDESS in 2004.

"Dr. Jeter has distinguished himself as a strong instructional leader who has had great success in establishing collaborative relationships and creating a climate of open communication among all stakeholder groups,” Beraza said. “He has a deep commitment to and understanding of the military communities we serve. His wide range of extremely productive professional development and career experiences make him an outstanding match for the DDESS deputy director’s position.”

Jeter earned his bachelor’s degree from Pembroke State University, Pembroke, N.C., his master’s degree in education from Campbell University, Buies Creek, N.C., his Certificate of Advanced Study from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and his Doctorate in Education in 1991 from Campbell University. He graduated from the Principal’s Executive Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed the Executive Potential Program offered through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He attended the Harvard Institute for School Leadership’s Summer Institute on Leadership and Teaching for High Standards and recently completed the Federal Executive Institute.

Both Jeter and his wife, Linda, traveled as military dependents during their fathers’ careers. They have a daughter in college and a son who is a high school senior.
