PEACHTREE CITY, GA — July 14, 2006 — Dr. Elaine Beraza, Director, Department of Defense (DoD) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Cuba, (DoDDS-Cuba) announced today that Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas has been named the assistant superintendent for Camp Lejeune in the North Carolina District.

"I am delighted that Mrs. Thomas has accepted the position as Assistant Superintendent at Camp Lejeune for the North Carolina District. Her years as a teacher and administrator, her familiarity with Camp Lejeune, as well as her special empathy with the children of our service members, combine to make her the ideal person for the job." said Dr. Tom Hager, North Carolina District Superintendent.

She earned her bachelor's of science degree from Eastern Carolina University, Greenville, NC, her master's degree from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, and her administrative certification from Eastern Carolina University.

Thomas began her teaching career in 1970 with the North Carolina school system and also taught for five years in Virginia. In 1981, she joined the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) when she began teaching at Camp Lejeune. Her duties as an administrator began in 1984 when she was named assistant principal of Stone Street Elementary. From 1985 through 2001, Thomas was principal at Brewster Middle, Stone Street Elementary, and Berkeley Manor Elementary schools. From 2001 through August 2005 she was an instructional Systems Specialist (ISS) with the DDESS Area Service Center. In the fall of 2005, she was named principal at Tarawa Terrace II Elementary, also at Camp Lejeune.

Thomas and her husband, Lynn, have two grown children and reside in Jacksonville, NC.
