  • Boat Rides at Great Falls

  • Towpath at Big Slackwater OPEN

    As of September 22, 2012 the towpath is now open in the area known as Big Slackwater (Mile 85.8-88.9). The road detour no longer needs to be used. Towpath access at McMahons Mill (mile 88.1) is still closed until further notice.

Public Canal Boat Rides

Take a leisurely ride on a replica canal boat and experience history first hand. Great Falls offers mule-drawn rides on an 1870's packet boat. Williamsport provides rides on a 1920's electric launch boat.

Canal historians estimate approximately 35,000 laborers helped dig the canal as well as build aqueducts, culverts, locks, lock houses, etc.  It took 22 years to build the canal from Georgetown, DC to Cumberland, MD.  Much of the workforce were immigrants from Ireland and western Europe.
