  • Boat Rides at Great Falls

    Due to fluctuating water conditions, we cannot guarantee each ride scheduled. Please call 301-767-3714 to confirm the schedule for the day. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

  • Towpath at Big Slackwater OPEN

    As of September 22, 2012 the towpath is now open in the area known as Big Slackwater (Mile 85.8-88.9). The road detour no longer needs to be used. Towpath access at McMahons Mill (mile 88.1) is still closed until further notice.

Welcome to Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Nearly four million people visit the C&O Canal each year. From spectacular views of Mather Gorge and Great Falls, peaceful walks or bike rides through nature, tours of lock houses and other historic structures, special events, or boat rides on the watered sections of the canal, the C&O Canal offers something for everyone.

Friendly volunteers and staff at visitor centers can answer questions and help plan your activities. Each visitor center offers different exhibits and orientation films for that area of the park. Join staff for summer hikes, bike rides, or special programs. Younger visitors can participate in the Jr. Ranger program. Whether you're here for an hour or a few days, we hope you enjoy your exploration of the park.

Did You Know?

Photo of former Georgetown Flour Mill.

The C&O Canal begins in Georgetown.  The canal made extra money by selling water to numerous factories in Georgetown to power water driven machinery such as water wheels, etc.  Many factories were located next to canal property.
