News: Bees as ‘bioindicators’ of airport pollution
June 29, 2010 - Some airports
in Germany, including Dusseldorf International Airport, are
monitoring air quality by testing the honey from bees kept
nearby. Although the honey has shown only very low level of
toxins, using bees as “terrestrial bioindicators” is still
experimental.

News: Cities: some of the hottest places on Earth
June 29, 2010 - Urban areas
may be more susceptible to climate change than non-urban
areas, according to recent research in the UK. As
atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide continue to rise,
cities will retain more heat during the day and experience
less cooling at night. Urban daytime temperatures could rise
up to five degrees by 2050.

News: Solar bulbs illuminate a greener path
June 25, 2010 - In areas
where electricity is not always available, kerosene -- a
dirty fuel -- is burned for lighting. Solar light bulbs
could help solve this problem. The small solar bulb contains
solar panels and LEDs and when fully charged, provides up to
four hours of light.

News: SB 375 could save Californians money
June 25, 2010 - An analysis
released by Vision California shows that constructing
communities near transportation, schools, work and
recreation could significantly diminish pollution. Senate
Bill 375, approved in 2008, requires regional agencies to
meet certain guidelines for reducing greenhouse gas
emissions. According to the analysis, if SB 375 is
implemented correctly, Californians could save $6,400
annually.

News: Solar power from the Sahara
June 24, 2010 - Within the
next five years, European powers aim to harness solar power
from Northern Africa. The European Union hopes to tap into
the bountiful sunlight that blazes down on the Saharan
desert and extract solar energy for domestic purposes.
Europe’s goal is to derive 20 percent of their energy usage
from renewable sources by 2020.

News: California may mandate storing electricity
June 24, 2010 - The
California Assembly has passed legislation that will require
electricity derived from alternative sources, such as wind
and solar, to be stored for more pressing times.
Greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced if
electricity stored from wind or solar plants could be used
when most needed.

News: Preventing emissions in paradise
June 24, 2010 -
Downtown Honolulu will cut carbon emissions and its use of
harmful refrigerants by implementing seawater air
conditioning. Frigid deep sea water will be transported
through a piping system and used to cool buildings in the
city. If the process proves successful, the method could be
extended to Waikiki.
