Shell Cited Again by EPA for Clean Water Act Violations in Puerto Rico
For the second time in less than a year, EPA has cited Shell Chemical Yabucoa in Puerto Rico for violating the federal Clean Water Act by improperly maintaining its deep ocean outfall equipment and discharging unauthorized pollutants. For this most recent violation, EPA has issued both a complaint – in which it has proposed a penalty of $153,057 – and a compliance order requiring Shell to remedy those violations. “Water is central to the health of Puerto Rico’s economy and its people, and Shell’s violation of the Clean Water Act is unacceptable,” said EPA Acting Regional Administrator George Pavlou. “EPA will continue to hold accountable anyone who violates the laws that protect Puerto Rico’s valuable waters.”

Stony Brook University Hospital and EPA Sign Historic Green Partnership
Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook, N.Y. is not just the only university-based hospital on Long Island, it is the first hospital in the nation to pledge to reduce its environmental impact through a comprehensive agreement with EPA which outlines goals and strategies for energy and water conservation, solid waste management, green design and the use of environmentally-friendly products. "This agreement shows that a medical institution like Stony Brook University Hospital can provide world-class medical care while taking steps to protect the environment,” said EPA Acting Deputy Regional Administrator Barbara Finazzo. “This comprehensive agreement not only addresses broad issues like energy and water usage, but also those unique to the health care sector, like using environmentally-friendly medical supplies.”
