IAQ Tribal Partners Program
EPA's Tribal Strategy and Plan
A draft "straw" plan was made available May 21, 2012 at the National Tribal Forum, or NTF, on Air Quality in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The priorities and recommendations in the "straw" plan were developed with the help of tribes with significant experience dealing with indoor air quality and/or specific radiation concerns. EPA invites all Tribes to review the straw plan and provide comments on the priorities, recommendations, and specific suggestions on actions EPA can take to improve the plan. The purpose of the Plan is to:
- Optimize EPA's radiation and indoor air programs' limited resources;
- Increase collaboration across EPA and its Regional Offices; and,
- Increase responsiveness to tribes.
All comments will be considered prior to developing a final plan in September 2012.

Spotlight on Tribal Champions
Finding Solutions to Improve Radon Testing in Tribes
As the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers, radon has become a serious issue for many tribal communities, including the Southern Ute Indian Tribe of Colorado. Peter Diethrich is the tribe's General Assistance Program, or GAP, Manager of Environmental Programs. The goal of the GAP is to assist tribes in developing the capacity to plan and establish environmental protection programs and to develop and implement solid and hazardous waste programs in accordance with their individual needs. Once the Southern Ute Tribe developed an efficient solid waste program, Peter was directed by his EPA grant manager to alter the program to include IAQ with an emphasis on radon. Read more.
