June 2012 Import Highlights

Monthly data on the origins of crude oil imports in June 2012 has been released and it shows that two countries exported more than 1 million barrels per day to the United States (see table below). The top five exporting countries accounted for 68 percent of United States crude oil imports in June while the top ten sources accounted for approximately 88 percent of all U.S. crude oil imports. The top five sources of US crude oil imports for June were Canada (2,460 thousand barrels per day), Saudi Arabia (1,456 thousand barrels per day), Mexico (862 thousand barrels per day), Venezuela (750 thousand barrels per day) and Iraq (649 thousand barrels per day). The rest of the top ten sources, in order, were Columbia (491 thousand barrels per day), Nigeria (471 thousand barrels per day), Angola (346 thousand barrels per day), Russia (252 thousand barrels per day) and Kuwait (249 thousand barrels per day). Total crude oil imports averaged 9,101 thousand barrels per day in June, which is an increase of 192 thousand barrels per day from May 2012.

Canada remained the largest exporter of total petroleum in June; exporting 3,051 thousand barrels per day to the United States. The second largest exporter of total petroleum was Saudi Arabia with 1,456 thousand barrels per day.
