Reports, Research, and Literature
NCI has produced and collaborated on several reports that address the special challenges facing adolescents and young adults with cancer. NCI partnered with the Lance Armstrong Foundation to conduct a Progress Review Group to address the research and cancer care needs of patients in this age group. Recommendations for a national agenda to improve cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes among this age group were made. Below are a number of reports and resources to help you learn more.

Reports
- Closing the Gap: Research and Care Imperatives for Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer
This comprehensive report from the Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Progress Review Group (PRG) is a collaborative effort between NCI and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. It outlines recommendations for improving the outcomes for adolescents and young adults with cancer. - Closing the Gap: A Strategic Plan
This action plan includes recommendations for improving the outcomes and quality of life for adolescents and young adults with cancer and was created by the LIVESTRONG Young Adult Alliance (LSYAA) and NCI. - Living Beyond Cancer: Finding a New Balance
This report from the President's Cancer Panel describes cancer survivorship issues using a life span approach. Issues common to all survivors are identified as well as challenges specific to those diagnosed as children (ages 0-14 years), adolescents and young adults (ages 15-29 years), adults (30-59 years of age), and older adults (ages 60 and older).
Facts and Figures
- Snapshot of Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer
Information about cancer incidence, mortality, and survival in adolescents and young adults. Selected research advances and activities relevant to this population are listed. - Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer by Site: Incidence, Survival and Mortality
A chapter from NCI's SEER Cancer Statistics Review that focuses on cancers unique to adolescents and young adults and the variations in disease patterns within this age group. - Cancer Epidemiology in Older Adolescents and Young Adults 15 to 29 Years of Age, Including SEER Incidence and Survival: 1975-2000
This monograph is the first to collect detailed information about cancer incidence and outcomes in adolescents and young adults. - Cancer Incidence and Survival Among Children and Adolescents: United States SEER Program 1975-1995
This NCI publication describes statistical trends and risk factors associated with childhood cancers, including those seen in adolescents ages 15 to 19 years.
Research
- Preserving Fertility While Battling Cancer
Information about the potential impact of cancer treatment on the fertility of cancer patients and ways to address issues related to fertility preservation decisions. - Improvements Needed for Adolescents and Young Adults
A brief description of several NCI-supported research projects focused on characterizing cancers in adolescents and young adults and refining treatment methods to improve outcomes. - Conversation with Dr. Crystal Mackall, NCI Pediatric Oncology Branch
Cutting edge research occurring in NCI's Pediatric Oncology Branch is described and the rationale for including young adults in certain pediatric cancer research is explained. - A New Cancer Specialty: Follow-up for Long-term Survivors
Information about the importance of coordinated long-term follow-up care for cancer survivors to reduce the occurrence or severity of late effects of cancer and its treatment. - Adolescent and Young Adult Health Outcomes and Patient Experience (AYA HOPE) Study
This project will learn how best to obtain consent, collect medical records, and survey recently diagnosed AYA cancer patients in community settings in order to study treatment patterns and outcomes for these patients. - Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Biology Workshop
This workshop focused on acute lymphoblastic leukemia, as well as breast and colorectal cancers. Participants agreed more research is needed on the underlying biology of AYA cancers to learn whether age-specific differences influence the clinical behavior of these cancers. - NCI Funded Research Portfolio
A database that contains information about research grant and contract awards made by the National Cancer Institute. - NCI Research Resources
A directory of research tools and services for cancer researchers. - NIH Funding Opportunities and Notices
Access to RFAs, PAs, and NIH medical and behavioral research grant policies and guidelines.
