World AIDS Day 2011

Just prior to this year’s World AIDS Day, a new Vital Signs report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that nearly 3 out of 4 Americans living with HIV do not have their infection under control. The authors suggest the low percentage is because 1 in 5 people with HIV do not realize that they are infected and, of those who are aware, only 51 percent receive ongoing medical care and treatment.

Today, CDC also launches a new campaign to increase HIV testing so that more people can access care, which is the gateway to treatment and ultimately viral suppression. This new national awareness campaign, Testing Makes Us Stronger encourages African American gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men to stay strong and informed.
