Economy Challenges

The U.S. Department of the Treasury's mission is to maintain a strong economy and create economic and job opportunities by promoting the conditions that enable economic growth and stability at home and abroad, strengthen national security by combating threats and protecting the integrity of the financial system, and manage the U.S. Government’s finances and resources effectively.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) protects human health and the environment.  It has the primary responsibility for setting and enforcing national standards under a variety of environmental laws, in consultation with state, tribal, and local governments.  The agency also:

• works with industries and all levels of government in a wide variety of voluntary pollution prevention programs and energy conservation efforts,
• conducts environmental assessment, research, and education,
• gives grants to state environmental programs, non-profits, educational institutions, and others and
• identifies and solves environmental problems at our labs throughout the country.

EPA employs 17,000 people in headquarters program offices, 10 regional offices, and labs. More than half of EPA employees are engineers, scientists, and environmental protection specialists; other groups include legal, public affairs, financial, and computer specialists.  You can learn more about EPA at epa.gov/aboutepa.
