Sustainable Buildings and Campuses

The Federal Government oversees approximately 500,000 buildings. Federal construction spending is approximately $30 billion per year. Energy costs alone equal approximately $7 billion each year. This represents an enormous opportunity to transfer sustainable technologies and practices on a large scale and help transform the marketplace.

This section outlines strategies, best practices, and resources to help Federal agencies implement sustainable design practices within Federal buildings and communities. A program overview detailing FEMP sustainable design activities is available. Best practices for operations and maintenance are also available.

The section includes:

  • Basics: Introduction to sustainable design and operations, including an overview of sustainability guidelines, benefits, and policies for buildings and communities.

  • Federal Requirements: Laws and regulations outlining sustainable design and operation mandates Federal agencies must meet.

  • Project Implementation: Implementation steps for integrated, whole-building systems as an essential component for sustainable design and operations.

  • Case Studies: List of Federal and industrial case studies outlining sustainable design and operations planning, implementation, and results.

  • Working Group: Background information, guidance, meeting notes, and other resources surrounding the Interagency Sustainability Working Group (ISWG).

  • Resources: Extensive list of resources designed to help Federal agencies implement sustainable design principles while meeting Federal requirements.
