9/11 Day: Get Out and Serve!

For the last few weeks, we've been discussing how and why you should serve on the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance. Now with 9/11 Day just around the corner, it's time to roll up your sleeves, get out there, and serve!

Volunteers create a wall mural in the library of West Education Campus, a K - 8 public school in Washington, DC. The volunteers were at the school as part of a September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance event organized by HandsOn Greater DC Cares and U.S. Vets -- United States Veterans Initiative. The event was attended by over 200 White House and Corporation for National and Community Staff and their families. (Corporation photo by Sam Kittner, 2011)

Making time to volunteer for the September 11th Day of Service is a great way to engage with your community while honoring the victims and survivors of 9/11. Service knows no bounds, age, or ability. And you will likely find that most projects in your area will welcome and accommodate any and all who are ready to participate.

Whether you pick up a shovel at a community cleanup, grab a paintbrush at a local school, swing a hammer and make repairs for a neighbor in need, or collect canned goods for a food drive, we hope you will join the thousands of other Americans serving their country for 9/11 Day.

Just remember these three ideas to make your 9/11 Day a productive one:

Connect: Looking for a way to participate in your area? Sign up for a project near you and volunteer alongside the thousands of Americans who are making time to better their communities, and honor the victims and families of 9/11.

Plan: Want to plan your own project? It's never too late! Get started by watching the CNCS online webinar and turn those thoughts into action.

Dedicate: Already connected to a project? Take a moment to dedicate your service on 9/11, and spread the word about why you are serving or for whom you choose to serve.

Expanding Opportunity Through Active Volunteering
While the economy continues to show signs of improvement, there are still many workers who are facing challenges in connecting to new careers. The Department of Labor has encouraged dislocated workers to pursue education and training to improve their skills and better position them to compete for employment opportunities. Many workers have taken advantage of these opportunities, but it is also important to lay a path forward for those workers who have not enrolled in training and seek other options to build their skills and increase their chances to find employment.

Put Volunteering to Work on Your Resume
Good news. A recent LinkedIn survey found that 41 percent of professionals considered volunteer work as much as paid work when evaluating job candidates. Now here’s the bad news: Slightly less than half of the 89 percent who had volunteer experience included it on their resumes. That’s a mistake -- put your volunteer experience to work for you.
