ConocoPhillips Proposed Throughput Increase Project

The APCD and the SLO County released the Notice of Preparation (NOP) for the environmental evaluation for ConocoPhillips proposed project to increase the throughput by 10% at their refinery on the Nipomo Mesa. A Public Scoping Meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 30 at the Cypress Ridge Pavilion.

2010 NETWORK PLAN and 2010 NETWORK ASSESSMENT

The 2010 Ambient Air Monitoring Network Plan and 2010 Ambient Air Monitoring Network Assessment have been completed and are ready for public review and comment. The Network Plan is an annual examination and evaluation of the Districts air monitoring program. The Network Assessment is a more detailed examination and assessment of the more technical aspects of the monitoring program performed every five years. Public comments to both documents are welcome and may be submitted to our office at 3433 Roberto Court, San Luis Obispo, 93401. Comments must be received by June 25, 2010 and should be addressed to Jay Courtney.

Pollution Prevention (P2)

P2 Logo Septemeber is Pollution Prevention Month. This year the Pollution Prevention School Challenge will shed a long-overdue spotlight on existing school programs that reduction pollution and challenge others to think of ways they can reduce air pollution at their school/classroom.

The District will formally kick-off of the 2010 Pollution Prevention School Challenge at the start of school in the fall of 2010. More information on this program will be posted on our website later this summer. You can also call us at 805-781-5912 to see how you can get involved.

South County Phase 2 Particulate Matter Study

The Air District has released its report on the South County Phase 2 Particulate Matter Study. The study was conducted to determine the cause of high levels of airborne particulate matter impacting air quality and public health on the Nipomo Mesa, and whether offroad vehicle activity on the Oceano Dunes is a contributing factor. The APCD and its study partners hosted a public workshop on March 3 to share the results of the Study, followed by presentation of the results to the APCD Board and their acceptance of the report and findings on March 24, 2010.

Food Miles Campaign

The APCD continues to expand the implementation of the Food Miles campaign that brings awareness to the amount of miles most food in the US travels to get to our plate. On average, food travels over 1,500 miles before it gets to the consumers plate. By supporting local farmers, the Air District is working to preserve agricultural lands while reducing the amount of fossil fuel needed for food distribution. Through farmers’ markets and other spring events, the Air District is distributing reusable tote bags, recipe cards, and refrigerator magnets to increase awareness of what individuals can do to make a difference.

Think Globally, Eat Locally!

Attention Portable & Auxiliary Engine Owners

Owners of portable and auxiliary engines are legally required to obtain a State Air Resources Board (ARB) Registration or Air District Permit for all portable and auxiliary engines 50 hp and greater.  Typical engines of this size are found on generators, wood chippers, compressors, pumps, and drilling rigs. In addition, motor graders, cranes, vacuum trucks and street sweepers commonly have an auxiliary (additional non-drive) engine that also fall under these requirements.  Penalties increase overtime so it is important to obtain a permit for these as soon as possible.  Currently, only the latest Tier 3 engines, those manufactured within the last few years, can be registered with the ARB. Old Car Buy-Back Program

The APCD old car buy-back program is now open for vehicles 1992 and older that have been registered in SLO County for the past two years. $800 will be provided to the first 175 vehicle owners who meet program criteria. Call 800-717-7624 to participate. More Arrow Image

The Forum will bring together distinguished national, state, and local leaders to share their perspectives for advancing climate change programs, addressing key issues and questions, and expressing their views for what the future holds.
