Secondary School Teacher Requirements

Secondary School Positions (Usually Grades 7-12)

0310: Teacher, English

A major in English or a minimum of 30 SH in English. A maximum of 5 SH in speech and/or journalism may be counted toward meeting this requirement. Course work must include English literature, American literature, the teaching of composition (writing process), and a minimum of 12 SH in upper level English courses.

0311: Teacher, Speech

A major in speech, a minimum of 30 SH in speech and dramatic arts, or a minimum of 9 SH in speech plus sufficient additional course work in English to total at least 30 SH is required. A minimum of 12 SH in upper level course work in English, communication arts, journalism, or speech is required.

0313: Teacher, Drama

A major in drama, a minimum of 30 SH in dramatic arts or a minimum of 9 SH in dramatic arts plus sufficient additional course work in English to total at least 30 SH is required. A minimum of 12 SH in upper level course work in English, communication arts, or drama is required.

0320: Teacher, Social Studies

A major in social studies or a minimum of 30 SH in the field of social studies is required. Course work must include U.S. history, world history, political science, and physical geography. A minimum of 12 SH of upper level course work in social studies is required. A minimum of 3 SH is required in the specific subject area assigned.

0330: Teacher, General Science

A major in general science or a minimum of 30 SH in the field of science is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH of upper level science courses. A second category is not required.

0331: Teacher, Biology

A major in biology or a minimum of 30 SH in the field of science is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH in biology and a minimum of 12 SH of upper level courses in science.

0332: Teacher, Chemistry

A major in chemistry or a minimum of 30 SH in the field of science is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH in chemistry and a minimum of 12 SH of upper level courses in science.

0333: Teacher, Physics

A major in physics or a minimum of 30 SH in the field of science is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH in physics and a minimum of 12 SH of upper level courses in science.

0334: Teacher, Health

A major in health or a minimum of 30 SH in specific health related course work is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH in upper level health courses.

0336: Teacher, Health Care

A state OR DoDEA professional teacher certificate in any secondary area AND a current valid license as a Registered Nurse AND 2 ½ years of experience at the level that demonstrates instruction or supervision of employees in a health care field is required. 

0350: Teacher, Art

A major in art or a minimum of 30 SH in art is required. Course work must include one course in each of the following areas: methods of teaching art, drawing, painting, art history, and sculpture or ceramics. A minimum of 12 SH in upper level art course work is required.

0351: Teacher, Music

A major in music or a minimum of 30 SH in music is required. Course work must include one course each in methods of teaching music, methods of vocal music instruction and instrumental music methods instruction. A minimum of 12 SH in upper level music course work is required. A second category is not required.

0352: Teacher, Humanities

Must be fully qualified in art, music, English, or social studies. Applicant must have completed a minimum of 9 SH in other related fields such as: humanities, art, music, history, drama, theater, literature, dance, or philosophy.

0355: Teacher, Physical Education

A major in physical education or a minimum of 30 SH in physical education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH in upper level physical education courses.

0360: Teacher, Business

A major in business or a minimum of 30 SH in the field of business is required. Course work must include one accounting course, a minimum of 12 SH in upper level business courses and a minimum of 9 SH in computer science courses.

0361: Teacher, Computer Science*

A major in computer science, a minimum of 18 SH in computer science or 12 SH in computer science with additional qualification as a teacher of mathematics, science, or business is required. Course work must include programming languages such as JAVA, C++, VISUAL BASIC or other equivalent computer programming course work.

0365: Teacher, Home Economics*

A major in home economics or a minimum of 30 SH in home economics is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH in upper level home economics courses.

0366: Teacher, Technology Education*

A major in industrial technology or industrial arts, or a minimum of 30 SH in technology education or industrial arts is required. A minimum of 12 SH of upper level course work in technology education is required. Course work should include such courses as: Construction Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Communication Technology, Energy Power, Transportation Technology, Industrial Arts Curriculum Project, and Computer-Aided Design (CAD).

0363: Teacher, Career Practicum (formerly Teacher, Coordinator Work Experience)

Must be fully qualified in either business, or industrial technology education or guidance or vocational occupation subjects or career education or home economics. Course work must include at least 3 SH in career counseling, career guidance and/or vocational/occupational counseling.

0369: Teacher, Culinary Arts

Possess a Baccalaureate degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college/university; AND Possess a Culinary Arts degree from an U.S. accredited Culinary Institute (a minimum of 18-month culinary program); AND Complete 9 semester hours in professional teacher education such as Educational Psychology/Learning Process, Classroom Management and Discipline, and Educational Technology within the first 2 years of the appointment; AND Must qualify in one other secondary teacher category.

or,

Possess a Baccalaureate degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college/university; AND Possess a Culinary Arts degree from a U.S. accredited Culinary Institute (a minimum of 18-month culinary program); AND Acquire a DODEA or state certificate in one other secondary classroom teacher category by the end of the fifth school year of employment.

0370: Teacher, Chinese (Mandarin)

DoDEA or State certificate as a Chinese (Mandarin) Language Teacher

or,

DoDEA or State certificate as a secondary classroom teacher in any category AND Chinese (Mandarin) communication skill as verified by an ACTFL Foreign Language Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) rating of at least an intermediate high score.

or,

Applicants must possess four of the following:
1.  Chinese (Mandarin) communication skill as verified by an ACTFL Foreign Language
Oral Proficiency Interview (OP1) rating of at least an intermediate high score; and
2.  English language communication skill as verified by an ACTFL English Language
Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) rating of at least an intermediate high score; and
3.  A baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting

One year of teaching experience is required and may be in an adult education program, middle or secondary school, college, or industrial establishment in the particular occupational field(s) for which applying.

(Non-certified) - Non-certified training instructor applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent certificate. Additionally, they must complete a formal program at or above the high school level (or vocational high school level), trade school, or military/Peace Corps training program in the specialty area. Evidence (diploma or journeyman license) must be submitted; 2 1/2 years of experience at the level that demonstrates instruction or supervision of employees in the specialty for which applying are required. Up to 1 1/2 years of the required 2 1/2 years of experience may be substituted by education at the rate of 1 year of study for 9 months of experience in the subject specialty for which applying. 0380: Automotive Technology
