Middle School Teacher Categories and Requirements

0210: Teacher, English

A major in English or a minimum of 24 SH in English. A maximum of 5 SH in speech and/or journalism may be credited toward meeting this requirement. Course work must include English literature, American literature, the teaching of composition (writing process), and at least 9 upper level semester hours in English.

0211: Teacher, Speech

A major in speech, a minimum of 24 SH in speech and dramatic arts or a minimum of 9 SH in speech plus sufficient additional course work in English to total at least 24 SH is required. A minimum of 9 SH of upper level course work in the field of English, communication arts, or speech is required.

0212: Teacher, Journalism

A major in journalism, a minimum of 24 SH in journalism or a minimum of 9 SH in journalism plus sufficient additional course work in related fields such as communication, speech, or English to total at least 24 SH is required. A minimum of 9 SH of upper level course work in the field of English, communication arts, speech, or journalism is required.

0220: Teacher, Social Studies

A major in social studies or a minimum of 24 SH in social studies. Course work must include U.S. history, world history, political science, and physical geography. A minimum of 9 upper level semester hours in social studies is required. A minimum of 3 SH is required in the specific subject area assigned.

0230: Teacher, General Science

A major in general science or a minimum of 24 SH in the field of general science. Course work must include a minimum of 9 SH of upper level science courses. For teacher of life science and earth science, 9 SH are required in the assigned subject.

0234: Teacher, Health

A major in health or a minimum of 24 SH in specific health related course work. Course work must include a minimum of 9 SH of upper level health courses.

0240: Teacher, Mathematics

A major in mathematics or a minimum of 24 SH in mathematics. Course work must include a minimum of 9 SH of upper level course work in mathematics.

0390: Fashion Design

(Certified) - Certified training instructor applicants must meet the minimum requirements stated in the Application Requirements and Information - Minimum Academic Preparation and Requirements; and Student Teaching or Internship. One year of teaching experience is required and may be in an adult education program, middle or secondary school, college, or industrial establishment in the particular occupational field(s) for which applying.

(Non-certified) - Non-certified training instructor applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent certificate. Additionally, they must complete a formal program at or above the high school level (or vocational high school level), trade school, or military/Peace Corps training program in the specialty area. Evidence (diploma or journeyman license) must be submitted; 2 1/2 years of experience at the level that demonstrates instruction or supervision of employees in the specialty for which applying are required. Up to 1 1/2 years of the required 2 1/2 years of experience may be substituted by education at the rate of 1 year of study for 9 months of experience in the subject specialty for which applying. A second category is not required.
