Assistant Secretary for Vocational and Adult Education Brenda Dann-Messier and Roberto Rodriguez, White House special assistant to the President for education policy, will deliver opening remarks at a public meeting Wednesday in Washington to discuss the newly released report, Improving Adult Literacy: Options for Practice and Research.

The study, funded by the U.S. Department of Education and conducted by the National Research Council, recommends a program of research and innovation to gain a better understanding of adult literacy learners, improve instruction, and create the supports adults need for learning and achievement.

Members of the authoring committee will present the report’s key findings, recommendations, and messages. Invited experts will examine strategies for acting on the recommendations to address the educational needs of adults with low literacy and improve their employment opportunities and economic outcomes.

The discussion is designed to establish some common understandings about the report and consider next steps for shaping activities at federal, state and local levels for improving adult literacy instruction. The event will be webcast with information provided at the link below.
