Rep. Calvert Statement on the Killing of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya and the Attack on the U.S. Embassy in Egypt

Rep. Calvert (R-CA) issued the following statement in response to the murder of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, three other Americans, the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Egypt, and President Obama’s statement:
"The Administration should have stopped with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s statement which at least defended U.S. constitutional freedoms and reinforced that those freedoms are never an excuse for violence.
“On the 11th anniversary of 9/11, innocent Americans were once again killed by forces of radical Islam. The actions in Libya and Egypt remind us that we must remain vigilant in our fight against the voices of extremism and hate. America stands for freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Religious sensitivities are never a justification for the murder of American citizens or of any violence.
"The statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Cairo is an embarrassment and a disgrace. The White House is responsible for statements issued by our Embassies and while the Administration has distanced itself from it, the statement remains on the U.S. Embassy in Egypt’s website. It needs to be taken down immediately; it conveys weakness and an apologist attitude when we have nothing to apologize for.
"The President’s 2009 apology tour has yielded us nothing but the appearance of weakness. It is time for the President to stand up and state unequivocally that the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Egypt and the murder of the U.S. Ambassador and three other individuals is unacceptable and the U.S. will not hesitate to act as we see fit. Unfortunately President Obama’s failure of leadership extends from the economy to foreign policy and rather than strong condemnations, and appropriate actions, we get apologies and sympathy for those who waged the attacks.”
