Opportunity Description:

Determine the rates of exchange as well as the environmental controls on the exchanges of greenhouse gases, water vapor, and heat between the Earth's surface and the atmosphere. This work has been and will be undertaken over a variety of surfaces -- lakes, forests, grassland, and rangeland at a variety of locations. Volunteers will complement a research group in capacities set to their abilities and availabilities. Assistance in the office, laboratory, and field are needed. Volunteers will learn basic laboratory and field procedures for collection and analysis of gas samples, varied experience with computers to collect and analyze data, and have exposure to an array of sciences including ecology, meteorology, hydrology, and soil sciences.

Opportunity Description:

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is dedicated to the timely, relevant, and impartial study of Earth’s dynamic processes that affect our natural resources. The USGS Arkansas Water Science Center offers diverse volunteer opportunities for students and non-students in hydrology, geology, biology, engineering, computer science, geographic information systems (GIS), administration, and many other related fields. The USGS is committed to developing the science skills of volunteers by providing opportunities to pursue careers in hydrologic technology.

Volunteers are needed in both an office environment and field data collection.

Office volunteers will work with hydrologists, hydrologic technicians, and administrative staff on data entry and checking, data analysis, GIS, field trip preparation, laboratory, recycling, and/or other clerical duties. Good computer skills are desired.

Field data collection involves assisting hydrologists and hydrologic technicians in field trip preparation, streamflow measurements, stream gage construction, water-sample collection, laboratory, surveying, and related tasks. This work requires frequent physical exertion and moderate discomfort to weather conditions. Some field trips are overnight and you can be reimbursed for motel and meal expenses.

Volunteer opportunities are available in the USGS offices in Little Rock and Fayetteville.

Applicants must be United States citizens.
