Regional Information: Louisiana
Nicknamed the "Pelican State", Louisiana is the 31st largest state with a land area of 43,562 square miles. The state’s geography consists of wetlands, lakes and bayous to the south with rolling hills to the north. Louisiana is popular with hunters and fishers. Louisiana’s estimated 2006 population is 4,287,768. It’s 64 political divisions are called parishes, not counties. The state's largest city, New Orleans, is a popular tourist destination and home to its historic French Quarter and the annual Mardi Gras celebration. The capital, Baton Rouge, has the tallest capitol building in the country. Louisiana became a territory in 1804 and a state in 1812. The state was named in honor of France's King Louis XIV.
