Title: Security of Bluetooth Systems and Devices: Updated Guide Issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
Published: August 13, 2012
Abstract: This bulletin summarizes the information that is included in NIST Special Publication (SP) 121, Revision 1, Guide to Bluetooth Security: Recommendations of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. This guide was revised by John Padgette of Accenture, Karen Scarfone of Scarfone Cybersecurity, and Lily Chen of NIST to update the original version of SP 800-121, which had been issued in October 2008. The bulletin discusses the applications of Bluetooth technology, which is used to establish wireless personal area networks and to interconnect devices and networks; the changes and improvements in Bluetooth technology that have been implemented in commercial devices; and the security issues related to the implementation of Bluetooth services. The bulletin also summarizes NIST’s recommendations to organizations for protecting their Bluetooth devices and networks from security threats and vulnerabilities. References are provided to NIST’s publications that help organizations protect networks and devices, and to other sources of information on the development of Bluetooth technology and standards.
